The now retired general Gonzalo Santelices not guilty, it is not at all. His move to retirement, which I am the way, responded to a decision and institutional pressures, and was not at all voluntary, "is unfair. Completely unfair. Is false statements made by the lawyer Hector Salazar in that Santelices "could have refused, as many of the officers refused at the time, to fulfill such orders, not nothing happened" (Radio Cooperativa).
I was also a lieutenant in the days of Sabbath. I know of no officer of the Armed Forces or the Police, who has refused "to comply with such orders" (very different is the case of some uniformed, overt supporters of President Allende, who were separated from their posts same September 11, 1973 and immediately jailed, harassed and tortured).
After the start of the tragedy, no officer refused to obey orders murderers. And the reason is clear: we were completely convinced of the full justice of all that was working. Is that we were lied treacherously. We talked about the need to destroy the Marxist terrorism. We told stories about what sordid Communists, MIR, socialist, leftist and Christian Mapuce intended to do with us and our wives and children. We are convinced of the existence of Plan Z.
however, was the military superiority of those days the only culprit of all that swarm of lies? No, indeed. There was a whole "intellectuals" who dressed in civilian-certainly from of those policy areas that had been converted to the Armed Forces and Carabineros de Chile in a litany of obsequious-plotting and disseminating macabre stories. Sowing hatred that is capable of generating psychotic torturers and murderers.
Santelices, sir, not a murderer. In those days, merely to comply with an impossible to ignore, an order whose validity he could not object. Santelices was, is and will be sure to have fulfilled their military duty.
